Social networking for comics, writers, and speakers

Today is my birthday.

I'm sharing this with you, but not because I want to get a thousand e-cards (and please - no singing stripper telegram; it's awkward.)

The reason I'm sharing this very personal info is that, I -- usually not so vulnerable Judy -- have been filled with appreciation for all the people who are on this list, because so many of you have affected the course of my life in some positive way.

You might be a standup student who took my workshop years ago, my high school drama teacher, my publisher, my plumber, my speaker bureau, my pharmacist, or something else that defies description.

But however you might be described, I felt the need to reach out because this particular birthday is a landmark one.  When my mother passed away, it was too soon, and very unexpected.  And this birthday makes me older than my mother was when she died.

That's a very weird sensation.  It's made me fully aware how short life can be, and that now, I'm living in the bonus round.  That's filled me with deep appreciation for the time I've spent with you.  (Well... most of you.)

We all live like we have an unlimited amount of time.  But sadly -- we don't.  Time is a gift that I'm suddenly all too aware of.

So, if you have any dreams --- do something about them now.  Stop waiting.  You don't have forever, and while that might seem a little scary -- if you choose to really start living - it's pretty damn exciting.

Judy

Happy Birthday, sounds like a milestone?!  I know how that feels as I lost my Dad much sooner than I ever expected.

This year I experienced a bout of cancer and I'm more than ever aware of a need to take action on my dreams. I have always hoped to become a comedy writer and especially enjoy writing comedy dialogue. Unfortunately, I don't have the courage to do a stand-up routine. I wrote a t.v. script with the title"Someday is Now". I pay much more attention to that title now. Enjoyed your Comedy Event and your book.

Judy,  Thanks for the reminder; it really helps.  What's a little case of nerves or brief humiliation against a life that equals to a sum total of "I coulda been a contender" regrets?  Your mother had to have been a remarkable lady; she raised a daughter who grew up to teach and inspire so many struggling creative souls and that's an incredible legacy in itself.

Happiest of Birthdays Mz. Carter!!!  You have been a part of my pursuit of the perfect joke for years!  I still remember my first showcase and how your introduction was funnier than my act!  Although I have not continued on the comedy road I still have dreams of doing it one more time and killing!  What you wrote rings so true as I morn the loss of my younger cousin earlier this month.  Thanks for reaching out to all of us and inspiring us to SHOW YOU THE FUNNY!

My wife has cancer in her lungs, liver, breast and spine. At dinner she was telling us about her afternoon and her first lesson learning to speak Chinese. When I asked her why she wanted to learn Chinese she said, "What if they don't speak English where I end up?"

"Then you're probably in the right spot!" Or 15 year old, said.

Judy Judy Judy. Big bear Nov1998. Happy Birthday to you! Your statement on age, turning older than a deceased patent resonates. I hope others really give this some consideration. Originally, when
My mother died in 2004, She said to "get out" from where I was knowing I've been aspiring to be a comedian since the sixth grade I told her it was my goal to hit 20 years and go get'em well. Now I am coming up to 27 years. There are guys who've committed murder serving less time. Geeze so, I convince myself daily that I tell enough jokes throughout the day to cure my fix, make others laugh a bit but it's Not even close to the vibe onstage Thanks Judy for reminding all of us how fleeting it all is. Best Rob
